The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship is an open-wheel racing series based in Ontario and sanctioned by the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario region.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends, with each event hosting three rounds.

  • June 3-4 - SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • June 16-18 - VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • July 29-30 - BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • August 19-20 - OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • September 1-3 - CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • September 16-17 - BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The final weekend of the 2023 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. Drivers would compete in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

The 2023 Toyo Tires F1600A champion, Logan Pacza, secured the title at the penultimate weekend of racing and did not enter the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. Pacza has been selected as one of two Team Canada drivers going to England for the FF Festival and Walter Hayes Memorial.

The F1600B championship was wide open, with three drivers, Dylan McPherson, Andrew Mason and Steve Bodrug, having a mathematical chance of collecting the crown.

Three laps of the weekend’s second race were completed when the red flag displayed for a fire. Time ran out before the contest could be restarted and the checkered flag was thrown. Points were not awarded.

The first lap through Moss Corner for the final race of the 2023 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. At the head of the pack is the winner of Saturday’s contest and the leader of the morning race when it was red-flagged, Callum Baxter, in the No. 65 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ14. Behind Baxter is the No. 44 CC Motorsports Spectrum 015, driven by Conner Janeteas. Seventeen competitors started the final round.
Britain West Motorsport’s Callum Baxter qualified on the pole for race one, driving the No. 65 Mygale SJ14. At the beginning of the race, he lost the lead to Conner Janeteas but retook the position for the win. On Sunday morning, Baxter was in first place when the contest was red-flagged. He went flag to flag in the finale for his fourth victory of 2023. He finished second in the F1600A championship despite missing the VARAC weekend.
After a season-long battle, Dylan McPherson earned the F1600B crown. McPherson grabbed the class victory in the first contest of the weekend. He was second when race two was stopped. In the finale, the No. 27 McPherson Racing Van Diemen RF93 driver finished second in F1600B. His biggest threat for the title came from Andrew Mason. However, Mason had a miserable event and failed to finish the last race.
Another contender for the F1600B championship was veteran Steve Bodrug. Bodrug earned seven class victories more than any other F1600B competitor. However, he skipped the VARAC weekend to attend the Canadian Grand Prix. Driving the No. 41 SpeedProSignShop.com Van Diemen RF91, Bodrug finished second in race one of the weekend. In the next contest, he was leading when the red flag came out and was sixth in the finale.
Chasing Callum Baxter all weekend was Conner Janeteas. Janeteas pilots the No. 44 CC Motorsports Spectrum 015. He qualified second fastest for the weekend’s first contest and led briefly before Baxter grabbed first place. Janeteas was second when Sunday morning’s race was stopped. In the final race of the season, he finished 4.032-seconds behind Baxter. Janeteas delivered his best results of 2023 at the BEMC event.
This year’s recipient of the Bob McCallum Sponsorship Award is Antonio Costantino. For 2023, Costantino joined Brian Graham Racing, driving the No. 3 Piper DL7. In his rookie season, he earned four podium results, all of which were third-place finishes. In Saturday’s race, Costantino qualified third but lost a spot to Cole Janeteas and finished fourth. In the final race, he started and collected the checkered flag in third place.
F1600B competitor Bill Tebbutt finished fourth in the championship standings despite missing the OSCC Summer Classic at Calabogie Motorsports Park. Tebbutt ended the season with a pair of podium results. He qualified fifth in class in race one at the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. However, during the contest, Tebbutt advanced three positions to finish third. He ended the season with a victory after starting eleventh overall.
The other half of CC Motorsports is Cole Janeteas, who drives the No. 45 Spectrum 015. Cole hasn’t performed at the same level as his brother, Connor; however, he has collected a couple of podium finishes. At the final event of the championship, Janeteas had mixed results. In Saturday’s contest, he qualified fourth and passed Antonio Costantino for a third-place finish. Unfortunately, he did not start the finale.
