The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship is an open-wheel racing series based in Ontario and sanctioned by the Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario region.

The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship calendar consists of six weekends, with each event hosting three rounds.

  • June 3-4 - SMP Cup - Shannonville Motorsport Park
  • June 16-18 - VARAC Vintage Grand Prix - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • July 29-30 - BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • August 19-20 - OSCC Summer Classic - Calabogie Motorsports Park
  • September 1-3 - CTMP Labour Day Weekend Sprints - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park
  • September 16-17 - BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races - Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The second weekend of the 2023 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix event. Drivers would collect points in three contests around the ten-turn 2.459-mile road course.

The start of the final race of the weekend and twenty-three competitors funnel through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s corner one. The points leader, Logan Pacza, leads the pack in the No. 64 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ13. Behind Pacza is the other front-row starter, Sam Baker, driving the No. 51 Baker Racing Spectrum 012b. Brothers Conner and Cole Janeteas, also in Spectrums, are next in line.
Rookie sensation Logan Pacza drove the No. 64 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ13. Pacza scored victories in two of the first three rounds at Shannonville Motorsport Park. The other race was won by his teammate Callum Baxter. However, Baxter and some other Toyo Tires regulars chose to enter the F1600 event at the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite pressure from Sam Baker, Pacza went three for three.
F1600B competitor Andrew Mason also swept the weekend’s proceeding. The No. 32 Mason Racing Van Diemen RF90 driver collected a third and two runner-up results in the season opener. Mason entered Canadian Tire Motorsport Park second in the standings. In race one, he went flag to flag for the win. The following day, Mason inherited the victory when Mike Dodd retired. He went unchallenged in the finale.
Logan Pacza may have swept the weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, but he was often under pressure from Sam Baker. Driving the No. 51 Baker Racing Spectrum 012b, Baker qualified third for Saturday’s race and battled with Conner Janeteas before grabbing second. He traded the lead four times with Pacza in race two but came up short. He led the final contest until Pacza passed him on the last lap.
Conner Janeteas drove the No. 44 CC Motorsports Spectrum 015. Janeteas came just short of standing on the podium at Shannonville Motorsport Park with a pair of fourth-place results. He would rectify that situation at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Janeteas qualified second fastest for race one but lost the position to Sam Baker and was third. On Sunday morning, he collected another fourth place and was fifth in the finale.
The No. 3 Brian Graham Racing Piper DL7 is driven by 2023 Bob McCallum Sponsorship Award recipient Antonio Costantino. The former karter collected his first series podium in the finale at Shannonville Motorsport Park. Costantino qualified sixth for race one at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and finished fourth. The next morning he passed Conner Janeteas for a third-place result. In the afternoon, Costantino finished fourth.
Another Brian Graham Racing team member, Gerry Kavanaugh, had an excellent weekend in the season opener. The driver of the No. 4 Piper DL7 earned second and third-place finishes. On Saturday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Kavanaugh qualified fifth but finished thirteenth. The next day would be an opportunity to redeem himself and he did so in the weekend’s final race, moving from sixth to a third-place result.
Dylan McPherson began his 2023 F1600B campaign with two victories and a third-place result at Shannonville Motorsport Park. McPherson qualified fourth in class for the first contest at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and finished in the third position. On Sunday, he collected a pair of runner-up results in F1600B. Despite his performance, McPherson lost his points lead and trailed Andrew Mason by six markers.
