The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was scheduled to start its 2021 season in early June at Shannonville Motorsport Park. However, the pandemic prevented race events from starting until provincial restrictions were lifted. The revised calendar kicked off in June at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as part of the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix. A month later, the series returns to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in conjunction with the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races. This event was followed by the championship’s only visit to Calabogie Motorsport Park. Teams are in action again on the Labour Day Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The penultimate event occurs during mid-September at the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. The Celebration of Motorsports at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is the replacement for the weekend cancelled early in the season and acts as the series finale. A total of eighteen contests will be conducted during 2021 to determine category champions.

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. Or, any car with a Honda Fit engine
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford motor.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The fifth weekend of the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was conducted during British Empire Motor Club Late Summer Trophy Races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Lap one through Moss corner for the start of Saturday afternoon’s Toyo Tires F1600 Championship contest at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. At the head of the twenty-three car field, is the F1600A points leader and pole-sitter, Nick Gilkes, in the No. 64 Britain West Motorsport Mygale SJ14. Behind Gilkes, also in Mygales, are his teammates Jake Cowden and Megan Gilkes, who qualified second and third, respectively.
This weekend, the current F1600A class points leader, Nick Gilkes, moved closer to securing the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. Gilkes qualified on the pole for Saturday’s contest and led flag-to-flag in a race that ended under caution. The next morning the driver of the No. 64 Mygale SJ14 started third but moved into the lead on lap-2 and grabbed another victory. In the finale, Gilkes finished in third place.
Megan Gilkes, who has been racing in England this year, made her first start of the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship at the Late Summer Trophy Races. Last season, Gilkes competed with Brian Graham Racing, but for this event she joined her brother, Nick, at Britain West Motorsport. She earned fourth and fifth-place finishes in the first two races of the weekend, but in the finale, she gave the Gilkes family a third win.
The start of the Sunday morning race for the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. Twenty-two competitors stream through Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s first turn for lap-1. Leading the charge is the No. 2 Brian Graham Racing Piper DL7 of the pole-sitter, Jonathan Woolridge. Chasing Woolridge are the Britain West Motorsport Mygales of Jake Cowden and the points leader, Nick Gilkes.
Britain West Motorsport F1600B competitor, Connor Clubine, kept his streak of consecutive class victories at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park alive. This record is all the more impressive when you consider that Clubine started at the rear of the field for the race and moved into the category lead in less than ten laps. The two contests on Sunday were business as usual for the driver of the No. 6 Van Diemen RF91.
Jonathan Woolridge started the Late Summer Trophy weekend by qualifying sixth fastest for race one. The driver of the No. 2 Brian Graham Racing Piper DL7 was on the move early and finished third in the caution-filled event. During Saturday’s contest, Woolridge set the fastest time on started on the pole the next morning. He was passed by Nick Gilkes on lap-2 and finished second. In the finale, Woolridge was fourth.
Starting on the outside of the front row for the weekend’s first contest was Britain West Motorsport’s Jake Cowden, driving the No. 66 Mygale SJ13. Cowden would follow his teammate, Nick Gilkes, home to a runner-up result. He started second in race two but could not hold off Nick Gilkes, Sam Baker or Megan Gilkes and finished fifth. Cowden ended the weekend with another second place after battling with the Gilkes siblings.
The No. 51 Kerr Industries / Baker Racing Spectrum 12b was driven by Sam Baker. Baker was gridded in the fourth position for the weekend’s first contest. He lost a spot to Jonathan Woolridge during the race but made a pass on Megan Gilkes for a fourth-place result. Sunday morning, Baker started fourth and captured the final place on the podium. In race three, he crossed the finish line in fourth place but was disqualified.
