The Toyo Tires F1600 Championship Series was scheduled to start its 2021 season in early June at Shannonville Motorsport Park. However, the pandemic prevented race events from starting until provincial restrictions were lifted. The revised calendar kicked off in June at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as part of the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix. A month later, the series returns to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in conjunction with the BARC Canadian Touring Trophy Races. This event was followed by the championship’s only visit to Calabogie Motorsport Park. Teams are in action again on the Labour Day Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The penultimate event occurs during mid-September at the BEMC Late Summer Trophy Races. The Celebration of Motorsports at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is the replacement for the weekend cancelled early in the season and acts as the series finale. A total of eighteen contests will be conducted during 2021 to determine category champions.

The single-seater, open-wheel race cars in the championship are powered by one of two engine options - a four-cylinder, 1600-cc Ford engine or the 1.5-liter HPD Honda L15A7. Both motors produce approximately 120-horsepower. A mixture of European and North American chassis is used by competitors. Minimum vehicle weight is determined by the suspension design and ranges from 1050 to 1125-lbs. Teams are required to use a spec tire – the Toyo Proxes R888.

Drivers collect championship points in one of two groups.

  • F1600A – This category is for newer chassis’ built between 1995 and 2021. There are two engine options available the Ford or Honda.
  • F1600B – This group is for cars constructed before 1995. They are powered by the Ford engine.

The manufacture date for the individual car and not the model is used to determine the year split and whether a vehicle is categorized as F1600A or F1600B.

The opening three contests of the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park during the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix. Drivers would collect points in races around the ten turn 2.459-mile road course.

The start of Sunday morning’s race for the 2021 Toyo Tires F1600 Championship. Leading the field of twenty-six drivers into corner one is Saturday’s winner and the pole-sitter, Jonathan Woolridge, in the No. 2 Brian Graham Racing prepared Piper DL7. Slotting in behind Woolridge is Sam Baker in the No. 51 Kerr Industries sponsored Spectrum 012b. Beside Baker is Jonathan Woolridge’s teammate, Jack Polito.
Jonathan Woolridge made his series debut in 2019 and since then he has collected many podium results but was yet to find the top step of the rostrum. In race one of this season, Woolridge captured his first victory. He was gridded fifth but moved into the lead early and traded the top spot before earning the win. On Sunday, Woolridge earned a second place in the morning and finished fifth in the red-flagged finale.
F1600B competitor Connor Clubine swept the opening weekend with three category victories. This was particularly fitting as the class winner was presented with the Oliver Clubine Cup in recognition of his grandfather. Driving the No. 6 Britain West Motorsport prepared Van Diemen RF91, he battled with the class A competitors and collected two seventh and one eighth-place overall finish.
Another big winner this weekend was Sam Baker, driver of the No. 51 Spectrum 012b. Baker qualified seventh fastest four Saturday’s contest and captured the final spot on the overall podium. However, on Sunday, he outdid himself and earned a pair of victories. In the morning, Baker was gridded fifth but moved into first-place midway through the event. The finale was more challenging, but he collected another win.
The first lap of the weekend’s finale through Moss Corner. Leading the field is the outside front row starter, Jack Polito, in the No. 4 Brian Graham Racing prepared Piper DL7. Behind Polito is the No. 23 Burloak Cycle sponsored Piper DL7 of Conner Wagland, who was gridded fourth. Trailing Wagland is Polito’s teammate, Jonathan Woolridge and the No. 66 Mygale SJ13 of the newcomer, Jake Cowden.
Rookie Nick Gilkes is following in the steps of his successful older sister Megan. However, unlike Megan, who raced for Brian Graham Racing, he joined Britain West Motorsport driving the No. 64 Mygale SJ14. The former karter transitioned quickly. During the opening weekend, Gilkes earned two runner-up results and a third-place finish. More importantly, he enters the July event second in the championship chase.
Another newcomer to Britain West Motorsport is Jake Cowden. Cowden, who pilots the No. 66 Mygale SJ13, also has karting experience. In his first series qualifying session, he was third fastest. Unfortunately, he dropped out of contention and finished a lap behind the leaders in twenty-first. On Sunday, Cowden’s fortunes change. On Sunday morning, he claimed fifth place and ended the event with a third.
Steve Bodrug has been competing in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship since 2007. Over these fifteen-years, he has driven the No. 41 Speedpro Imaging Van Diemen RF93. The F1600B competitor was no match for Connor Clubine and finished the first two races of the weekend in the runner-up position. Regrettably, Bodrug parked the Van Diemen at Moss Corner on lap-6 and became the first retiree of the finale.
