In 2014, the FIA introduced the Formula 4 concept globally to bridge the gap between karting and open-wheel racing. The Sports Car Club of America created the Formula 4 United States Championship in 2016. The series has grown rapidly in popularity. In the first season, there were fifteen races and nineteen drivers. This year there are seventeen races with twenty-six drivers registered.

The cars competing in the American championship are a Ligier JS F4 assembled by OnRoak Automotive. Powering the Ligier is a Honda K20 C1 2.0-liter engine which produces 160-horsepower. The Formula 4 Ligier is the only FIA-approved car manufactured and assembled in North America.

Competitors will visit six different venues. The 2019 season kick-offs in April at Road Atlanta which is followed by the Pittsburgh International Race Complex and Virginia International Raceway. In August, the teams travel to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The penultimate round is held at Sebring International Raceway in mid-September. The championship wraps-up with two races at Circuit of the Americas as a support event to the United States Grand Prix.

Rounds ten, eleven and twelve of the 2019 F4 United States Championship presented by Honda would be contested at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Drivers would compete in three thirty-minutes races around the thirteen-turn 2.258-mile road course.

The first lap of race one at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and round ten of the 2019 F4 United States Championship. Leading the field of twenty-two starters is the pole-sitter, Guilherme Peixoto in the XYZ Talents sponsored Ligier. Trailing Peixoto is his teammate and the eventual winner, Kiko Porto in the No. 12 Ligier. Behind, Porto is the third through fifth fastest qualifiers, Wyatt Brichacek, Christian Brooks and Nicky Hays.
It was almost a perfect weekend for the Aussie competitor, Joshua Car. In qualifying, Car was just shy of recording the fastest time by 0.089-seconds. It was of little consequence as he received a five-position grid penalty for causing an incident in the previous race a Virginia International Raceway. In round ten, he moved through the field and finished second. The point’s leader started the next two contests from the pole and led flag-to-flag.
As a result of Joshua Car’s grid penalty, Kiko Porto inherited the outside of the front row for the first event of the weekend. Porto pressured his teammate, Guilherme Peixoto and made a successful pass for the lead on lap-8. Porto was challenged by the points leader, Car but held on for his third victory of the season. Unfortunately, he did not fare as well in the next two races – finishing ninth and fifth.
The F4 United States Championship podium for round ten at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. In the center is the winner, Kiko Porto. This was the Brazilian’s third victory of the season and allowed him to close the gap on the championship point’s leader, Joshua Car. On the left side of the rostrum is the runner-up, Car who was coming off a pair of second-place finishes at Virginia. Completing the podium is Nicky Hayes.
The first lap of race two on Friday afternoon at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and the top three qualifiers have pulled away from the pack. Leading the field of twenty-two competitors into the ‘Esses’ is the pole-sitter and runner in the morning’s race, Joshua Car. Behind Car is the other front row starter, Nicky Hays in the No. 51 Ligier. Trailing Hays is the fastest qualifier for round ten, Guilherme Peixoto.
Nicky Hays didn’t join the series until the third race weekend at Virginia International Raceway. Hays failed to score points in the first two races at Virginia but in the finale, he was sixth. At Mid-Ohio, Hays was able to showcase his talent. In Friday’s first race, he started fifth and captured the last spot on the podium. In the afternoon, Hays grabbed a runner-up finish and he was fifteenth on Saturday after starting third.
Christian Brooks entered Mid-Ohio fourth in the championship standings – twenty-two-points behind Arthur Leist. With each race, Brook’s performance was improving and he scored his first victory in round nine. Brooks started the weekend’s opening race ninth and finished eighth. Later that day, he was fourth from the eighth starting position. On Saturday, Brooks captured the runner-up spot and moved to second in the points.
The driver of the No. 99 Ligier, Guilherme Peixoto recorded the fastest lap during qualifying for round ten which gave him his first pole position. Peixoto led the first eight-laps before his tires lost their grip and relegated him to a fourth-place finish. His fastest lap in race one earned the third spot on the grid for round eleven. In this event, Peixoto captured the final position on the podium. He delivered the same results on Saturday.
The F4 United States Championship podium for round twelve at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. In the center of the podium and taking his second victory of the weekend is Joshua Car. The results at Mid-Ohio allowed the championship leader to extend his points tally to seventy-one markers over Kiko Porto. On the left side of the rostrum is the runner-up, Christian Brooks and completing the podium is Guilherme Peixoto.
