The fifth season of the International Motor Sports Association Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada presented by Michelin kicked off 2015 on May 15-17 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In 2015, there were five race weekends with two forty-five-minute rounds at every series event. Following Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, teams would remain in Ontario for a doubleheader at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. Rounds four and five would be conducted in early July at Calabogie Motorsport Park. The next stop would be the series only visit to Quebec, where drivers would compete on the temporary circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The championship weekend would take place where the season started, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The series uses the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. This particular model was developed by Porsche for the one-make series that takes place throughout the world. The 911 GT3 Cup racing version is based on the production 911 GT3 RS road car. The cars are powered by a motor similar to those used in the 911 GT3 RS model. The engine is a four-liter flat six-cylinder that produces 450-horsepower at 8,500-rpm.

The series has two classes:

  • Platinum Cup – this category is comprised of the 2014 and 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.
  • Gold Cup – this group is for older models produced from 2010 to 2013.

The series also offers a Masters division for drivers 45-years of age or older.

Rounds three and four of the 2015 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada presented by Michelin were held at Toronto’s Exhibition Place as a support event for the Honda Indy. Drivers would compete in two forty-five-minute races around the eleven-turn 1.755-mile temporary street circuit.

The start of round three for the 2015 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. Leading the field of fourteen competitors down Lakeshore Boulevard is the pole-sitter and the series defending champion, Scott Hargrove, in the No. 25 OpenRoad Racing Porsche GT3 Cup. Trailing Hargrove is the third-fastest qualifier, Daniel Morad, driving the No. 22 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup.
The reigning Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Platinum Cup champion, Scott Hargrove, didn’t return to this year’s series until rounds three and four. Hargrove, driving the No. 25 OpenRoad Racing Porsche GT3 Cup, gave notice early when he qualified on the pole. He led the first race of the weekend flag-to-flag for the victory. In damp conditions on Sunday, Hargrove was no match for Daniel Morad and finished second.
Series rookie and former open-wheel racer Daniel Morad opened the season with a pair of third-place finishes. The driver of the No. 22 Porsche GT3 Cup qualified third fastest for Saturday’s contest. Unfortunately, he vanished from the lap chart on the fifteenth circuit. In the finale, Morad redeemed himself when he started third and charged to the front. He captured the victory by a margin of 4.184-seconds.
The Platinum Cup points leader entering the Toronto event was Chris Green, the driver of the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsport Porsche GT3 Cup. Green qualified second fastest for round three and chased the eventual winner, Scott Hargrove, to a runner-up result. He started in the same position on Sunday, but after some bumping, he lost second place to Daniel Morad with just over eleven minutes left in the contest and finished third.
The Gold Cup leaders, Martin Harvey and Orey Fidani fight for the real estate at corner nine during Sunday’s race. Harvey driving the No. 08 Wingho Motorsport Racing Porsche GT3, finished fourth overall in race one and scored his first class victory since 2011. Fidani in the No. 13 Pfaff Motorsport Porsche GT3 Cup claimed his second runner-up finish of 2015. The next day, the pair delivered the same results.
Last season Tim Sanderson won the Gold Cup division by two points. This year Sanderson joined the Platinum Cup category driving the No. 07 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup. In the first two rounds at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, he earned fourth and fifth-place finishes. On Saturday in Toronto, Sanderson finished on the podium and grabbed the Masters victory. The next day, he finished sixth.
Joining the series this year was Brazilian Bruno Chapinotti. The third-generation racer drove the No. 12 Porsche GT3 Cup. He crashed during the qualifying session for round one at CTMP and could compete in Saturday’s event. In the finale, Chapinotti started at the rear of the grid and in a Cinderella ending, he won the Gold Cup class. At Toronto, he earned a pair of third-place results, despite crashing in both rounds.
