The internationally successful Porsche GT3 Cup series was introduced to Canadian fans and participants in 2011. The championship is one of twenty-three similar GT3 Cup series contested throughout the world.

This year’s Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin kicks off on the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). Drivers will collect championship points during Saturday and Sunday races. Each event on the 2013 calendar was a doubleheader race weekend. The series then travels to Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve as a support event for the Canadian Grand Prix. Next on the schedule is the second visit to CTMP during the Mobil 1 presents the Grand Prix of Mosport. This is followed by a weekend at Le Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres for rounds seven and eight. Championships are decided during the final two races at Calabogie Motorsports Park in mid-August.

For 2013 series organizers dropped the Silver Cup category but added a Masters division for drivers 45-years of age and old for the Platinum and Gold Cup classes.

  • Platinum Cup – This category is for the 2010 - 2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup models. The GT3 Cup Porsche is based on the 911 street version.
  • Gold Cup – Older (2005-1/2 - 2009) Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars compete in this division.

A 4.0-liter aluminum six-cylinder engine powers the current generation Porsche GT3 Cup. The motor produces 450-horsepower at 7,500-rpm and is fitted to a six-speed sequential transmission. Stopping the Porsche are aluminum six-piston calipers on the front – while the rear is equipped with four-piston calipers. The alloy rims on the front of the Porsche are 9.5J X 18 and use 24/64-18 Michelin tires. And, on the rear are 12J X 18 wheels with 30/68-18 tires. The GT3 Cup weighs just over 1,180-kg.

The opening rounds of the 2013 Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin were held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s 2.459-mile ten-turn road course during the Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend.

The first lap through Moss Corner for the opening round of the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. Leading the field of seventeen entrants is the pole-sitter, Spencer Pigot, in the No. 21 Alegra Motorsports prepared Porsche GT3 Cup. Behind Pigot is the other front row starter, David Ostella driving the No. 13 Speed Merchants Porsche GT3 Cup. Trailing Ostella is the No. 9 Porsche of Chris Green.
Spencer Pigot’s first race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park was in 2010 at an Ontario Formula Ford Championship event, which he won. Returning to the track in 2013, he repeated the performance with a flag-to-flag victory on round one of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. On Sunday, the driver of the No. 21 Porsche GT3 Cup started on the outside of the front row and finished in the runner-up position.
Chris Green didn’t join last season’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada until round six. Green proved to be a ‘quick study’ and won the remaining four Gold Cup contests. He returned this year driving the No. 9 Porsche GT3 Cup that Kyle Marcelli piloted in 2012. Green qualified second fastest for the weekend’s first race and battled with David Ostella before finishing in the runner-up spot. In the finale, he finished third.
In 2012, Gold Cup competitor Tim Sanderson earned a season-high of two runner-up finishes. At this year’s opening weekend, Sanderson outdid himself. He won the class pole driving the No. 07 Fiorano Racing Porsche GT3 Cup and claimed the victory. During the contest, Sanderson set the fastest time in the Gold Cup division and started on the class pole on Sunday, where he would earn his second win of the event.
The fastest lap in race one of the 2013 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada earned the No. 9 Castrol sponsored Porsche of Chris Green the pole for the finale. Starting beside Green is the No. 21 Alegra Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup of Saturday’s winner, Spencer Pigot. In the second row are David Ostella and Marco Cirone. A total of seventeen competitors started round two and only one driver retired from the contest.
The No. 13 Speed Merchants entry Porsche GT3 Cup was driven by series newcomer David Ostella. The former open-wheel racer adapted quickly. Ostella qualified on the outside of the front row for Saturday’s contest. He was in contention until an incident with a backmarker dropped him to a fifth-place finish. The next day, Ostella started third and redeemed himself with his first series victory.
In last year’s season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Jean-Frederick Laberge was the man to beat as he swept the weekend’s Platinum Cup division. In 2013, the competition had ‘stepped up their game.’ Laberge put the No. 91 GT Racing prepared Porsche GT3 Cup in the fourth starting position for the first race of the weekend and finished a respectable third. On Sunday, he claimed the fourth position.
Last year, Carlos de Quesada delivered an impressive performance in race two of the opening weekend for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada. At that event, de Quesada started fifth and claimed the runner-up spot for the Platinum Cup division. In 2013, he was competing in the Gold Cup category driving the No. 50 Porsche GT3 Cup. During the weekend, de Quesada earned a pair of second-place finishes.
