The 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires offered racers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents at some of eastern Canada’s most widely recognized and well-established race tracks. The series provided amateur competitors with professionally organized events that would attract sponsors and fans. The success of the championship was reflected in the number of drivers who participated in race weekends. The average car count in 2009 per event was twenty-nine entries.

This 2010 schedule consists of seven race weekends at five different facilities. The format at each venue includes two races – generally, thirty-minutes in length. As has become tradition, the season kicks off on the Victoria Day long weekend at Mosport International Raceway. This is followed by the second of three stops at Mosport when the championship is a support event for the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Two weeks later, teams travel Quebec and compete at the ICAR Mirabel Airport circuit. Then it is back to Ontario for the series premiere event – Exhibition Place, Toronto, with the IndyCar Championship. Then teams make their only stop at on the street circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The penultimate rounds are conducted at Mosport during the Grand Prix of Mosport. Series champions will be crowned when teams make their second visit to ICAR in September.

In 2010, there were two classes. To help fans distinguish between the groups, the cars are fitted with different coloured windshield banners.

  • Touring - (Blue Window Banner) – This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed a minimal amount of performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Sentra and Acura Integra.
  • Super Touring – (Yellow Window Banner) - Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in the group include BMW, Subaru and Audi.

Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship competitors made their third and final visit to Mosport International Raceway for rounds eleven and twelve. The penultimate weekend would see two thirty-minute contests conducted around the ten turn 2.459-mile road course.

The pace lap and Castrol Canadian Touring Car competitors enter corner nine at Mosport International Raceway for the start of round twelve. On the pole is Saturday’s winner, David Ciekiewicz, in the No. 36 Donington Wenzel Motorsport Subaru WRX STi. Next to Ciekiewicz is the Aldo-Northwest Racing prepared BMW 328i driven by Greg Pootmans. In the second row are Sasha Anis and Mathieu Audette.
David Ciekiewicz raced the No. 36 Donington Wenzel Motorsport Subaru WRX STi and swept rounds eleven and twelve at Mosport International Raceway. After many podium finishes, these were his first two victories of the season. Although he led flag-to-flag, the wins were did not come easy. Both days, the Subaru driver was challenged by Greg Pootmans and in each event, Ciekiewicz captured first place by less than a second.
After a series of disappointing results, including failing to start round three at Mosport, Kurt Langeveldt found the top step of the Touring podium. Langeveldt qualified third fastest in his class for round eleven but captured the victory when Michel Sallenbach retired and he made a successful pass on Anthony Rapone. On Sunday, Langeveldt was unable to withstand a challenge from Tom Kwok and finished second.
The first lap of round eleven and the front runners in the Super Touring category enter Mosport International Raceway’s corner two. Leading the group is the second-fastest qualifier, Greg Pootmans, driving the No. 16 Aldo-Northwest Racing BMW328i. Pootmans would successfully defend his position and capture the runner-up position. He would also finish second in the finale.

Entering round eleven at Mosport International Raceway, he had four Touring class podiums, which included two victories. In the weekend’s first contest, Kwok finished third, but he notched up another win on Sunday after starting third in class.
Sasha Anis finally ‘hit his stride’ in rounds seven and eight at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. There the driver of the No. 87 Hyundai Genesis claimed a runner-up finish and a victory. Since that weekend, Anis scored another win in race ten of the season at Trois-Rivieres. In the series final 2010 visit to Mosport International Raceway, he grabbed a pair of third-place finishes.
In the ten events prior to the penultimate weekend at Mosport, the Touring points leader, Anthony Rapone, had nine podium finishes, of which four were victories. They only time Rapone failed to land on the rostrum was in round seven in Toronto, where he finished in fourth place. On Saturday and Sunday, Rapone ‘was on his game’ and added to his points tally with second and third-place results.
