The 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires offered racers an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents at some of eastern Canada’s most widely recognized and well-established race tracks. The series provided amateur competitors with professionally organized events that would attract sponsors and fans. The success of the championship was reflected in the number of drivers who participated in race weekends. The average car count in 2009 per event was twenty-nine entries.

This 2010 schedule consists of seven race weekends at five different facilities. The format at each venue includes two races – generally, thirty-minutes in length. As has become tradition, the season kicks off on the Victoria Day long weekend at Mosport International Raceway. This is followed by the second of three stops at Mosport when the championship is a support event for the NASCAR Canadian Tire series. Two weeks later, teams travel Quebec and compete at the ICAR Mirabel Airport circuit. Then it is back to Ontario for the series premiere event – Exhibition Place, Toronto, with the IndyCar Championship. Then teams make their only stop at on the street circuit at Trois-Rivieres. The penultimate rounds are conducted at Mosport during the Grand Prix of Mosport. Series champions will be crowned when teams make their second visit to ICAR in September.

In 2010, there were two classes. To help fans distinguish between the groups, the cars are fitted with different coloured windshield banners.

  • Touring - (Blue Window Banner) – This is intended to be an entry-level category. Vehicles competing in this class are allowed a minimal amount of performance enhancements. Manufacturers represented in this group include the Mini Cooper S, Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Sentra and Acura Integra.
  • Super Touring – (Yellow Window Banner) - Super Touring includes many of the same makes and models found in Touring. However, this category allows engine modifications and aerodynamic enhancements. Additional manufacturers competing in the group include BMW, Subaru and Audi.

The first two rounds of the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires were held at Mosport International Raceway. Drivers would compete in two thirty-minute contests around the ten turn 2.459-mile road course.

The start of round one for the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Toyo Tires. Leading the field into Mosport International Raceway’s corner one is the pole-sitter, Marc-Antoine Camirand in the Camirand Competition BMW Z3 Coupe. Behind Camirand is the defending Super Touring champion and the other front row starter, Nick Wittmer, driving the No. 1 Lombardi Racing Honda Civic.
Last season, Marc-Antoine Camirand, competed in the No. 36 Camirand Competition BMW Z3 Coupe at Trois-Rivieres and ICAR. Although Camirand set the fastest race lap at ICAR, his best result was a twelfth in class at Trois-Rivieres. With the BMW sorted for 2010, he swept the weekend at Mosport International Raceway. On Saturday and Sunday, Camirand started on the pole and netted himself a pair of victories.
Another competitor that dominated the weekend was Touring class driver, Anthony Rapone. Last season, Rapone finished second in the final standings - shy by just six points. By his performance in rounds one and two, he was going to rectify the 2009 outcome. Rapone, driving the No. 72 Durabond-Compass360 Racing Honda Civic Si qualified on the category pole and won both rounds.
The reigning Castrol Canadian Touring Car Super Touring champion was Nick Wittmer. Wittmer was part of the Lombardi Racing effort, which prepared Honda Civic Si-R for Benjamin Di Staulo and Alex Healy. Wittmer headed the group’s results in the No. 1 Honda Civic. In rounds one and two, he qualified second overall and in the Super Touring category. In both races, Wittmer followed, Marc-Antoine Camirand to the finish.
Another team with multiple entries was Octane Motorsports, which fielded Mini Cooper S for Michel Sallenbach and P.J. Groenke. Groenke drove the No. 47 Mini and earned a pair of podium finishes. He qualified fourth in the Touring category and captured the final position on the podium in round one. On Sunday, Groenke was gridded third, but when Karl Thomson fell out of contention, he inherited the runner-up spot.
David Ciekiewicz opened 2009 with a victory in the Spin2Win Racing BMW 328i. Last season, Ciekiewicz only participated in a limited number of races but competed in the Compass360 Acura TSX for six rounds. Another season and another car - this year, he was driving the No. 36 Subaru WRX STi. Ciekiewicz started the season with a third-place in Super Touring and finished fourth in Sunday’s contest.
Durabond-Compass360 Racing brought three Touring class Honda Civic Si to the first weekend of the 2010 Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship. The team’s drivers were Anthony Rapone, Andrew Danyliw and Karl Thomson. Thomson raced the No. 71 Civic and started Saturday’s contest second in his group and grabbed the runner-up spot. The next day, he started second, but fell out of contention and finished twelfth.
The Kwok brothers were entered in the Super Touring and Touring categories. Gary tested a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X but raced his familiar Acura CSX. Touring competitor, Tom drove the No. 55 M&S Racing Honda Civic. In the weekend’s first contest, he qualified third fastest, but could not hold off P.J. Groenke and finished fourth in class. He earned the final spot on the podium when Karl Tomson fell down the race order in the finale.
Audette Racing entered the No. 12 Acura RSX Type-S for Mathieu Audette. Last season, Audette had mixed results, either appearing at the top or bottom of the final results sheet – rarely in the middle. But in 2010, he started strong. Audette qualified fifth fastest for round one and at the finish, he was in fourth-place. On Sunday, he was gridded fourth but passed the Subaru of David Cieklewicz to finish third.
