ROAD ATLANTA - WORLD CHALLENGE TOURING

The Petit Le Man weekend at Road Atlanta hosted the final two events of the World Challenge Touring championship. Second place qualifier Neil Sapp made a great launch and led the field into turn one. Behind him a start line crash eliminated Drew Hagestad and Jim Daniels which resulted in a caution period for the first five laps.

Neil Sapp won the final two rounds of the championship in a duPont Motorsport BMW 325is. Sapp also had wins at Sears Point and Portland and finished second in the final standings.

On the fifth lap of round nine Pierre Kleinubing in the No. 1 RealTime Acura Integra Type R made contact with his teammate Hugh Plumb. Kleinubing went on to finish third which earned him enough points to win the World Challenge Touring championship for the second consecutive year.

Jeff Altenburg filled in for Alfred duPont who had cracked a few ribs in a non-racing accident. DuPont's choice paid off as Altenburg scored two-second places at the Road Atlanta events.

His move from twenty-first to eleventh in the second last round earned Charles Espenlaub the Borla award for the drive of the race. The Mazda Protégé driver faired slightly better in the final event scoring a ninth place.

This shot was taken just moments after the field received the green. On the pole is Pierre Kleinubing in the No. 1 RealTime Acura and next to him Jeff Altenburg in the No. 55 duPont BMW. Third place qualifier Neal Sapp aims for the hole between the two front row starters.

Just before the mid-way point of the race Leo Capaldi attempted to make an inside pass on Don Salama through the very fast turn twelve. The two drivers made contact - Salama in the Turner BMW 328is hit the wall and retired on the spot. Capaldi driving a Mercury Cougar continued but lost four-laps as the result of the incident.

Don Salama took the brunt of the incident with Leo Capaldi. The rear bodywork was pushed flush with the rear wheels. Salama's crash left him with a thirty-seventh place finish in the final round. He finished sixth in the championship just one point behind his teammate Will Turner.

Veteran World Challenge competitor Manny Matz's BMW 328is shows some damage from an incident during the final round. He is followed by his teammate Walter Markes Jr. in the No. 02 Millennium Racing BMW 328is. Matz and Markes Jr. finished twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh, respectively.

Ken Dobson started eighth in the final race driving the No. 7 BMW 328Ci and moved up to fourth place by the tenth lap. On the last lap he passed Pierre Kleinubing to take the final spot on the podium and in the process set the fastest lap of the race.
