MOSPORT - WORLD CHALLENGE GT

Pole sitter Peter Cunningham leads the field into turn one. Mosport was round three of the 2001 World Challenge GT championship. The event also carried some historical significance, as it was the 100th World Challenge race.

Third place starter Michael Galati in an Audi S4 Competition passes No. 81 Johannes van Overbeek on the inside at turn one. Van Overbeek in a Porsche GT3 Cup qualified fifth and finished fourth. Galati captured the last position on the podium.

Peter Cunningham led flag to flag and scored his second consecutive World Challenge GT victory. In addition to being the fastest qualifier Cunningham also set the quickest race lap.

Chevrolet Corvette C5 driver Phil McClure sits on the grid ready for the standing start. He started and finished in the eighth position.

Series Rookie Greg Merrill brakes for corner three. The Porsche 911 Cup driver qualified fourteenth and lost one position by the conclusion of the race.

Ninth fastest qualifier Jimmy Adams improved on his starting position to be classified in fifth at the conclusion of the race. The former Viper competitor switched to a Porsche GT3 Cup for the 2001 season.

The seat in the No. 41 Ford Mustang was filled by Trans Am driver and former World Challenge competitor Lou Gigliotti. The team's usual driver Boris Said was unable to start the race as he was arrested Saturday morning after a warrant was issued relating to a Canadian civil lawsuit dating back to 1989.

The Peterson Motorsports team chose not to make the long trek from the West Coast to Mosport. As a result, the David Schardt Porsche GT3 Cup was leased for Mike Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald qualified second but lapped traffic prevented him from getting close enough to Cunningham and challenge for the lead.
