The No. 2 Chevrolet Corvette moved into the lead with the retirement of the Dyson Riley & Scott. |

There were three Porsche GT1s entered at Daytona. Canadian Klaus Bytzek entered two cars one of which finished sixth overall and third in GTS. Gunnar Jeannette, Paul Newman, Wayne Jackson and Michael Brockman drove the No. 76. Unfortunately, they were the second car to retire from the race. |
| One of the surprises in the GTS class were the Marcos Mantaras. By late Saturday evening the No. 24 entry driven by Cor Euser, Calum Lockie and Herman Buurman split the two factory Corvettes. However, a number of problems delayed their progress and caused them to finish fourth and fifth in the GTS class. |

The Sports Racing Prototype II class was won by Andy Lally, Paul Macey, Peter Seldon and Martin Henderson. The Archangel Motorsports prepared Lola finished thirteenth overall and a comfortable twenty-three laps in front of the second place Sports Racing Prototype II Mazda Kudzu of Team Spencer. |
| Proving that a twenty-four hour race is a test of perseverance and endurance are the entries of the Flis Team and No. 96 Tropic Zone Racing. The Flis Camaro finished second in the American GT class while the Tropic Zone Oldsmobile Cutlass took fourth. |

The Saleen S7R entered by Paul Gentilozzi's Rocketsports team suffered through engine problems during practice and qualifying. Unfortunately, the car driven by Johnny Miller, Scott Pruett, Anthony Lazarro and Gentilozzi, retired after only 50-laps when it was involved in an accident. |
| Finishing second overall to the No. 2 Chevrolet Corvette was the White Lightning Porsche GT3RS driven by Mike Fitzgerald, Christian Menzel, Lucas Luhr and Randy Pobst. The team also captured the GT category win. |

One of the teams to benefit the most from the Dyson retirement was the Downing Atlanta team. It took the Mazda Kudzu driven by Howard Katz, Jim Downing, A.J. Smith and Chris Ronson nearly three hours to complete enough laps to take the Sports Racer Prototype lead and class win. |
| Finishing four laps behind the class winning GT car was the Porsche GT3RS entry of Freisinger Motorsports. The Freisinger car driven by Wolfgang Kaufmann, Lance Stewart and Ciril Chateau qualified fifty-seventh overall but moved up to a third place finish. |

The biggest news of the event was the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. The pair shared the car with Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins. Just after midnight the team had to replace a transmission and halfshaft but were able to make up the deficit and finish fourth overall and second in GTS. |
| It was heartbreak for the Dyson team. The No. 16 Ford powered Riley & Scott driven by James Weaver, Andy Wallace and Butch Leitzinger qualified on the pole and had a comfortable lead only to lose an engine and retire with less than three hours remaining in the race. |

The Japanese team of Toshio Suzuki, Shinichi Yamaji, Tsuyoshi Takahashi and Shogo Mitsuyama drove the Club Yellow Magic Ferrari. They finished thirtieth overall and seventeenth in the GT category. |
