LAS VEGAS - WORLD CHALLENGE


Former series champion Peter Kitchak ran the opening rounds of the series, however, an accident at Sears Point prevented him from returning until the Las Vegas event. He was able to qualify sixteenth and finish tenth in his Porsche GT3 Cup.

Alfred duPont was able to capitalize on his momentum from his first World Challenge Touring win at Laguna Seca. DuPont started seventh in his European Racing Technologies BMW 328is and contended for the lead until contact relegated him to a second place finish. During the event he set the fastest race lap.

Will Turner qualified third in the Turner Motorsports BMW 328is and was racing with the lead group until he made contact with Alfred duPont. After the spin Turner fell to twenty-ninth but was able to work his way up to fourth at the finish. His efforts earned him the Borla Performance Award.

Boris Said qualified fifth and ran with the lead pack during the race until he received a stop and go penalty for passing under the yellow. Despite this setback, which sent him to twelfth place, he was able to move his Mustang up to fourth at the finish.

In the last half of the season Mike Fitzgerald was one of the hottest drivers. At the Road Atlanta he became the first driver in World Challenge history to win GT and Touring races on the same weekend. This did not go unnoticed by the competition and in the final races of the series he appeared to get beat up on a regular basis – Las Vegas was no exception.

Despite not winning a single event in 2000 Jeff McMillin was able to capture the World Challenge GT title. This feat was accomplished through top ten finishes – his best result and only podium of the year was a second at Road Atlanta and his worst a ninth at Laguna Seca.

The Champion team had made tremendous improvements to the Audi S4 which allowed Michael Galati in to grab the pole and lead flag to flag for their first World Challenge win. Mike Fitzgerald, on the outside of the front row finished thirty-ninth after crashing on the twelfth lap.

Steve Pfeffer in a BMW 328is had several good runs during the 2000 season. With six top tens during the year he finished eighth in the overall standings and fourth in the rookie battle. At Las Vegas he had one of his better finishes taking seventh.

Terry Borcheller came very close to winning the World Challenge GT event in Las Vegas. A late race caution allowed him to close on race leader Michael Galati. Coming out of the last turn Galati missed a shift, which allowed Borcheller to draw alongside the Audi driver. At the finish line Galati’s margin of victory was only .105 seconds.

Nick Vitucci gets a lot of air in Las Vegas’ turn one chicane. The Acura Integra Type R driver qualified towards the back of the grid and a crash on lap 16 left him well down the finishing order.

The RealTime fleet of Acuras line up for practice at Las Vegas. At this event the team drivers included Pierre Kleinubing, Hugh Plumb, Kevin Schrantz, Carlos Steyer and Fred Meyer. Kleinubing would take the World Challenge Touring championship and the RealTime team was awarded Crew of the Year.

2000 Rookie of the Year, Justin Jackson, had a tough time at Las Vegas. He qualified fourteenth in his Porsche 993 RSR but after an on track clash finished in twentieth. Despite his difficulties at Las Vegas Jackson had a good year finishing fifth in the final standings - 36 points clear of the next rookie competitor.
