CHARLOTTE - WORLD CHALLENGE


Reese Cox qualified fourth in the GT class with his Corvette C5 and maintained the position early in the race. On lap 18 a blown engine in the Dodge Viper of Bobby Archer allowed him to move to third. In the closing stages of the race he trailed David Schardt and was able to pass him on the last lap to capture second.

Pierre Kleinubing led flag to flag in his Acura Integra Type R to capture the opening round of the 2000 World Challenge Touring championship at Charlotte. However, the race was far from boring as his RealTime boss Peter Cunningham started from the back and passed thirty cars on his way to a third place finish.

During qualifying Bill Cooper damaged the front of his Pirate Racing Corvette C5 but that was after he captured the pole. Cooper fell back to third on the start but was able to move back in front by the sixth lap. He led from there and finished almost 3-seconds ahead of Reese Cox.

Number 17 Grant Lockwood in a Honda Prelude takes evasive action as Kevin Schrantz in the No. 44 RealTime Type R and Alfred DuPont in the BMW 328is make contact. Schrantz’s teammate Hugh Plumb in No. 43 went on to finish second.

David Schardt qualified third in his Porsche GT3 Cup and was having a great weekend until the final lap. Schardt was in a close battle with Reese Cox for second when he spun on the last lap. He stopped sideways across the track and was hit broadside by Matt Drendel in a Ferrari 355 – neither driver was injured.

The Hikari Racing Toyota Celicas. The No. 99 was driven by Kurt Buchwald who qualified a respectable fifteenth but retired with mechanical problems. Kim Wolfkill in No. 98 completed only five laps after starting thirty-fourth. Unfortunately, the team had very little success and the cars vanished after the 2000 season.
